Inspirational transgender advocate, Joanne Lockwood is transforming perceptions through her consultancy firm SEE Change Happen. Having transitioned from male to female herself, Joanne knows first-hand the effects of a lack of belonging. Utilising such experiences to support corporate clients, Joanne is a sought-after speaker to discuss actionable strategies for creating inclusive environments and a diverse company culture that leads to improved output.

Founding SEE Change Happen in 2017, Joanne developed best practices for businesses through education and honesty. As the CEO of the specialist belonging consultancy, Joanne has made an impact through keynote talks, workshops, and her podcast ‘Inclusion Bites’ where she interviews inspiring people who have personal insights into inclusion and belonging. Not only does Smile, Engage and Educate make up the SEE aspect of her business title, but Joanne embodies the mantra and is guided by her desire to follow it in her personal and professional life.

Knowing as young as five that she was born into the wrong body, Joanne suppressed her feelings as she had no awareness of what it might mean. Growing up Joanne forged a successful and happy life as a male, going on to have children, join the Royal Air Force, and become President of the Round Table men’s club. Realising the importance of living and being authentic to herself, Joanne established the courage to tell her wife of 25 years of her ambitions to transition, and in 2017 she fulfilled her dream of becoming the woman she truly was.

Now a high-profile advocate for transgender rights, particularly in the workplace, Joanne also supports the charity Chrysalis whose motto is Gender Identity Matters. Many audiences will recognise Joanne from Channel 4’s documentary ‘The Making of Me’, which followed her gender transition over three years. Impactful, inspiring, and insightful, Joanne’s presentations as a speaker are transformative for all in attendance.

In November 2023 we sat down virtually with Joanne Lockwood and discussed how she overcame her fears leading up to her transition as well as her views on diversity and inclusion and why they are important to her. Watch our Exclusive Interview with Joanne Lockwood.

Joanne delivered an awareness session for colleagues which was both inspiring and thought provoking. Her no nonsense discussion of transgender issues, terminology and impact are I think, an absolute must for any business looking to engage colleagues on transgender and wider diversity and Inclusion matters. I am looking forward to identifying other opportunities to work with Joanne.

We were honoured to have Joanne participate in Levi’s inaugural D&I day. Great communication skills and professionalism throughout. Planning the event with her was so easy – she just understood what we were trying to do. Her discussion was fearless and honest and thought-provoking and real – a moment that those attending will never forget and I know I learned much from. I really hope we can work together again. Thanks Joanne.
