A passionate LGBT+ advocate, intersectional feminist and proud Romany Gypsy, Sally Carr MBE has been at the forefront of campaigning for young LGBT+ people for the past 30 years. Dedicating her life to bettering those of young people in the areas of sport development and social justice, Sally has worked to help marginalised people lead fulfilled lives. Having set up the Peer Support Project and founded The Proud Trust, Sally was named MBE for her services in supporting vulnerable and isolated LGBT+ young people and is now a popular LGBT speaker for events across the country.

Diversity and inclusion have always been a passion of Sally’s, influencing policies to ensure that marginalised people are both heard and respected. Triumphing over adversity, Sally came out as a Lesbian in the 1980s when the world was both hostile and homophobic. Determined to make a difference, Sally founded the Peer Support Project, a charity that offered support to the LGBT community. June is an extra-special month for Sally as it is both Pride Month and Gypsy, Romany and Traveller (GRT) History month in the UK. As a proud gay Romany gypsy, Sally brings an intersectional lens to her work which is rooted always in compassion: calling-in rather than calling-out, and not being afraid to embrace challenging conversations.

She later went on to become the founder of The Young Women’s Health Project, an organisation that empowered young bisexual and lesbian women and founded The Proud Trust– now the UK’s largest LGBT+ youth community. She has also founded Sapphormation, an LGBT+ festival for ideas and creativity. Now also a Director of Youth for Pride Sports and Director of The Empowerment People, Sally has been shortlisted for the 2021 National Diversity Awards Lifetime Achievement Award and nominated in the Inspirational Women Awards 2021.

Also a member of the Greater Manchester Children and Young People Partnership, a Trustee of Youth Focus North West, a member of Soroptimist International, an Ambassador for Manchester Metropolitan University and a Patron of The Pankhurst Trust, Sally is revered for her advocacy for LGBT youth. Now booked as an LGBT speaker for events, Sally covers topics such as the Gypsy Queen: coming out the margins, rainbow futures, all you need is love and a little help from your friends and our lives, our language. When looking for a speaker who promotes acceptance and support of the LGBT community, and empowers marginalised people to succeed, book Sally Carr MBE today.

Official Testimonials

Sally Carr is regularly booked to engage audiences at events, read their latest feedback below:

“Sally Carr MBE is an excellent public speaker. Having known and worked with Sally through her roles in the LGBT+ voluntary and community sector for some years, I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at the IUKI Youth Workers conference. Sally has the ability to capture the room in such a calm, warming and approachable way that you cannot do anything other than listen. This calm but very knowledgeable approach helps draw the audience in and keep the messages being shared sharp.
Sally takes a participative leadership approach to her speaking, as I believe she does to her work, ensuring that the focus is on the topic, the context, and the collective expertise that surrounds this and not herself. However, it is Sally that captures the topic and helps make people remember what they are absorbing in a refreshing way.
I think Sally would be an excellent addition to the LGBT Speaker Agency and provide an engaging addition to the organisation’s portfolio of expertise.”

Paul, CEO, LGBT Consortium

“Sally is a rare example of a passionate advocate and technical expert with the skills and astuteness to enthuse and empower those she is talking to. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Sally present to a complex audience with mixed levels of understanding on her topic with an ability to make everyone in the room feel valued and important. Sally is nationally respected as a leading advocate, campaigner and academic on LGBTQ+ rights, plus the impact on discrimination and inequality on those in the minority.
As a speaker and facilitator, Sally uses a blend of learning styles and engagement techniques in parallel with her vast experience and expertise to hold a room in a way rarely seen. Sally has also adapted to the blended digital and physical environment we all now live in – finding ways to reach her audiences effectively. As a trustee of the National Youth Agency, we value Sally’s speaking and facilitation skills, which we call upon regularly to achieve our mission.”

Leigh, CEO, National Youth Agency

“We are absolutely delighted to recommend Sally Carr as a speaker for workplace diversity and inclusion programmes and initiatives. We collaborated with Sally to explore the role that intersectionality plays in our lived experiences, taking from Sally’s insights, knowledge and experiences. Our purpose here was to raise awareness of our unique and varied identities, and emphasise the value and criticality of community allyship through empathy and “calling in”.
Sally is a natural presenter, bringing a warmth and openness to their approach which fosters a sincere and meaningful connection with the audience. She approached the brief fantastically, bringing together a purposeful, fun and insightful presentation covering these areas. We received glowing feedback from those that attended and who shared with us the level of impact this talk had on their perspective and thinking. We are so grateful for Sally’s effort and passion in making this happen for us! Thank you Sally!”
