Shrouk El-Attar is a revered Queer Engineer, belly dancer and refugee who has solidified prominence within her sector with passionate activism. Named as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in The World in 2018 by the BBC, Shrouk passionately advocates for LGBT+ rights and shares her personal experience of being a Queer Arab. As the current Founder and Lead Electronics Engineering Consultant at Shrouk El-Attar Consultancy, Shrouk’s journey to career success was not easy. A refugee, upon their arrival in the country, Shrouk was not allowed to attend university in the UK. Shrouk’s passionate advocacy for equality gained human rights lawyers, enabling refugees to access education in the UK. After gaining an MEng in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Shrouk began their career as a Medical Engineering Researcher for Cardiff University, before acting as an Engineering Instructor for National Instruments. Other engineering roles have included being an IoT Application Engineer for Intel Corporation and an Optical Network Development Engineer for Fujitsu Global.

Other prominent roles have included being the Vice President of Engineers Without Borders UK, Director of Diversity for the Electrical & Electronic Engineering Society, Lead System Engineer for Phytoponics, Electronic Engineer for Renishaw, Electronics Engineer for Elvie and voluntary work on the Covid-19 ventilators. Outside of engineering roles, Shrouk also founded the Shrouk El-Attar Trust, a charity dedicated to the support of the LGBT+ community in Egypt. Outside of engineering, Shrouk is a talented belly dancer and performs in a beard-wearing drag persona as a form of protest and activism.

Today, Shrouk is booked as a speaker and has almost a decade of experience addressing large audiences. Speaking on topics of LGBT+ rights, diversity in STEM, engineering and refugees, Shrouk has addressed the Houses of Parliament on multiple occasions, advocating for MP support of human rights. They have also been invited to deliver the TEDx talk Re-Thinking Gender and Sexuality, and spoken at events alongside pivotal figures such as Malala Yousafzai and Nicola Sturgeon.
