Aderonke Apata is a Nigerian-born barrister, multi-award-winning human rights activist, and keynote speaker whose extraordinary journey has made her one of the UK’s most inspiring voices on LGBTIQ+ rights and asylum advocacy. After fleeing Nigeria in 2004 to escape a death sentence imposed by a Sharia court for being a lesbian, Aderonke spent 13 gruelling years fighting for asylum in the United Kingdom. Her case drew widespread public attention, becoming emblematic of the systemic failures faced by LGBTIQIA+ peoples seeking asylum. Despite periods of homelessness, solitary confinement at Yarl’s Wood Detention Centre, and repeated legal setbacks, Aderonke remained unyielding in her pursuit of justice – not only for herself but for countless others facing similar persecution.
Following her hard-won refugee status in 2017, Aderonke channelled her resilience into formal legal education. She completed her Graduate Diploma in Law, obtained a Master of Laws, and successfully passed the Bar Professional Training Course. In October 2022, she was Called to the Bar of England and Wales, officially becoming a qualified barrister. Driven by her personal experiences, Aderonke specialises in immigration, asylum, and human rights law, particularly focusing on LGBTIQ+ asylum claims. Her legal expertise is further complemented by her accreditation as an ADR ODR International Accredited Civil/Commercial Mediator.
Aderonke’s impact extends beyond the courtroom. In 2014, she founded African Rainbow Family, a vital charity offering support and safe spaces to LGBTIQ+ refugees and people seeking asylum. She also co-authored the Black Leadership Empowerment Programme (BLEP), developed in response to the murder of George Floyd and now delivered through The Open University Business School. Her tireless activism has earned her numerous accolades, including the LGBT Positive Role Model Award (2014), DIVA Magazine’s LGBT Heroine of the Year (2015), Attitude Pride Award (2017), Activist of the Year at the Sexual Freedom Awards (2018), and inclusion in Amnesty International UK’s Suffragette Spirit Map (2018).
As a keynote speaker, Aderonke captivates audiences worldwide with her powerful blend of personal storytelling and expert knowledge. She regularly delivers talks and training sessions on topics such as LGBTIQ+ asylum processes, intersectionality, unconscious bias, equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), psychological safety, and allyship. Her speaking engagements serve not only to educate but to inspire organisations, professionals, and policymakers to create more inclusive, compassionate environments for marginalised communities. Aderonke’s remarkable story is a testament to courage, determination, and the transformative power of advocacy.
