Motorsports star, Charlie Martin is making history in her sport and the LGBT+ community. As a transgender racing car driver, Charlie has succeeded at completing many firsts throughout her career and continues to break down barriers to improve representation and awareness. Charlie uses her experiences to educate others as a speaker, and advise on inclusivity policies for corporate clients.
Gender aside, Charlie’s achievements on the track are remarkable, having raced since 2006 and without a family history in the sport, she’s gone on to secure herself a place as one to watch. From securing third place in her debut endurance performance to placing fourth in the 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup with her team Charlie continues to hit milestones in her motorsports career.
Charlie’s journey to success has required unwavering determination, courage and strength. Despite knowing she was transgender as young as seven years old, Charlie hid her feelings from her friends and family for fear of their reactions, leading her to suffer from mental health problems including depression, anxiety and eventually suicidal thoughts. In 2012, after years of inner turmoil, Charlie began to bravely transition to live as her authentic self.
Campaigning for equal rights and representation in sport, Charlie has used her position in motorsports to bring about progressive change, including getting the rainbow Pride emblem displayed on competition cars. She is also an ambassador for Stonewall and Athlete Ally which promote LGBT+ inclusivity within different industries, including motorsports. As a speaker, Charlie is armed with her personal experiences and campaigning work, enabling her to support corporate clients on their diversity missions.
In November 2023 we sat down virtually with Charlie Martin and discussed her decision to record her transition on Youtube. Watch our Exclusive Interview with Charlie Martin.
