One of TV’s most popular presenters, Dr Christian Jessen is a talented doctor who has become well-known for hosting a whole host of eye-opening medical programmes. Over the years his appearances on Embarrassing Bodies, Supersize vs Superskinny and more have made Christian incredibly popular with audiences. A proudly gay man, the TV star has also gone on to become a renowned LGBT+ speaker who can use his own experiences with sexuality and discrimination to inspire audiences everywhere.
In 2007, Christian was selected as one of the co-presenters of the brand-new medical programme, Embarrassing Bodies. The show was designed to help people who were suffering from a wide range of medical issues which are often taboo or misunderstood. Throughout the series, Christian utilised his medical expertise to help the show’s patients, with his empathetic and understanding style he was an instant hit with viewers. The programme went on to win a BAFTA and draw millions of viewers each week. This was Christian’s big break on TV, and he later appeared on several other programmes particularly in the medical field, such as Supersize vs Superskinny and Doctor Doctor.
Growing up, Christian knew that he wanted to help people and studied medicine at University College London, graduating in 2001. From there, he earned an MSc degree in sexual health with a particular interest in HIV and malaria. For two years he worked in Kenya and Uganda, helping people suffering from the conditions. Before his TV career, he also opened his own Harley Street clinic. At events, Christian shares his incredible life story with audiences, revealing the adversity he faced as a gay man in the media.
Most recently he has continued his TV presenting as well as publishing a range of medical books including Dr Christian’s Guide to Growing Up aimed at children and teenagers struggling with puberty and sexuality. An advocate for HIV education, he has presented several programmes teaching people about the condition and busting many myths. This includes performing a live HIV test on Loose Women. In recognition of Christian’s pioneering work raising awareness for LGBT matters, he has been named in the Independent on Sunday’s Pink List multiple times.
As well as this, Christian has produced and starred in the documentary Undercover Doctor: Cure Me I’m Gay which investigated therapies for the ‘cures’ of homosexuality. When booked as an LGBT speaker, Christian can discuss his medical expertise as well as talk about his homosexuality and issues he has experienced around it. One of the best speakers in the business, his charismatic and likeable personality makes him a big hit with audiences.
