Justin Bengry is famed as the convenor of the world’s first MA in Queer History, considered a leading figure of the LGBT community, as the Director of the Centre for Queer History at the University of London. Throughout his career, Justin has researched the relationships in queer history, including the link between capitalism and ‘gay pardons’ present in the UK. Now booked as a passionate LGBT speaker, Justin shares his expertise on gender, sexuality, social and cultural history and consumer culture.

After gaining qualifications of a Masters and PhD in History, Justin has enjoyed a successful career in teaching and lecturing. His prominent roles have included being a Teaching Assistant in European History and an Instructor in European Gender History at the University of California, and a Teaching Assistant in Twentieth-Century World History for The University of British Columbia. Now convening the world’s first MA in Queer History at the University of London, Justin is paving the way for more inclusive education and promoting the importance of teaching queer history.

Alongside his teaching, Justin is also the Managing Editor of Notches: (Re)Marks on the History of Sexuality blog and has previously acted as the Lead Project Researcher for the Pride of Place for Historic England. Justin has also been the recipient of several fellowships, including being an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology at Birkbeck and the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in History at McGill University. Having researched extensively into the LGBT history and heritage, Justin’s work has been featured in publications including the New York Times and The Guardian, and he was also included in the Queer Beyond London project.

A prolific contributor to scholarly publications, Justin has written titles including Who is the Queer Consumer? and Courting the Pink Pound: Men Only and the Queer Consumer. Gathering his expertise in LGBT history, Justin is now set to publish his first book in 2022, titled Locating Queer Histories: Places and Traces in the UK. Having researched the relationships between capitalism and homosexuality throughout history, Justin is now booked as an LGBT speaker to share his findings in educational and inspirational speeches. When booked as a speaker, Justin covers topics such as gender, sexuality and cultural history, an expert in raising awareness of LGBT rights and history.
