Mark Foster is a renowned Olympian, best known for his show-stopping performances in swimming. Having represented Great Britain in some of the biggest swimming competitions, Mark has filled his medal cabinet with six World Championship gold medals and has also broken the World Short Course Freestyle record four times. Back in 2017, Mark revealed his identity and came out as gay making headlines for his honesty and bravery. Now a popular choice as an LGBT+ speaker, Mark is a role model for others who are coming out or struggling with their identity.
From a young age, Mark had a prominent interest in sports and found his talent for swimming when he began to dominate short distances in the pool. Going on to compete at the National Championships, Mark was winning the 50 metres freestyle and the 50 metres butterfly, claiming titles 24 times. Solidifying himself as a talented swimmer, Mark was later selected to represent the British team and went on to represent the country in Commonwealth Games, European Championships and World Championships. Unfortunately, Mark failed to make the selection for Olympics in the sport but marked his significance as a flag carrier in the Parade of Nations at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Back in 2017, Mark appeared on Loose Women to discuss his sexuality, coming out as gay. Throughout his life, Mark has shadowed his sexuality and not allowed the public to see his true self. Quoting that he felt vulnerable and afraid of what people thought, Mark plucked up the courage to reveal his true identity and has since become a prominent advocate for LGBT+ issues. Now leading an ‘amazing’ life since coming out, Mark has attended the Stonewall Equality Dinner and supported charities such as Stonewall and the Terrence Higgins Trust.
Now a popular choice as an LGBT+ speaker for events, Mark is booked as an inspiration for others who may be struggling to express their sexuality. Admitting that he ‘tiptoed around the issue for so long’, Mark empowers and encourages others to share their sexuality and not be afraid of who they are. Mark has also previously spoken out about the treatment of LGBT+ people in countries such as Russia, raising awareness as a passionate LGBT+ activist to draw attention to the poor treatment of the community.
Mark Foster is regularly booked to engage audiences at events, read their latest feedback below:
“Mark was a speaker at Leicester Tigers for a game that we played against London Welsh. With over 300 people in the room, Mark used different techniques to keep everyone engaged and interested in what he was saying. With mostly businessmen and sports fans in the room, Mark was able to conduct himself in a manner that suited both parties and children. Mark’s experience in life after sport was extremely interesting, and our 1st team players took this in as something they need to start thinking about as well. The interactivity that Mark had with our guests was exceptional and spent over an hour signing autographs and having photos and it was a pleasure to host him and have him as our guest speaker.”
“Mark was a spokesperson for Gillette’s International Men’s day campaign where we wanted to raise awareness of men’s health but importantly male role models and the impact they can have. Mark spoke eloquently about his experiences growing up and what he sees as important for kids growing up. He really nailed the messaging and as a last-minute brief to him he delivered above and beyond what we could have asked for.”
“The event was a huge success; Mark was a great speaker and we have had plenty of compliments following the event. Please do pass on my thanks again to Mark. We all found him so approachable and he told his story to a wide-ranging audience and managed to engage everyone – pupils, parents and staff alike. He may like to know that we also raised over £3000 towards the school charities so thank you for his help in the various activities throughout the evening that supported that.”
“Mark was a powerful speaker, he held the room and touched on so many relevant points for us, especially allyship. We’ve already had lots of positive feedback and would recommend him!”
“Mark was a fantastic speaker for our LGBT+ members network, Prism. Mark provided an insight into his career and journey that was both refreshingly honest and inspiring for the members and allies on the call. It can be hard to create engaging sessions online, but Mark did it with ease and a bit of humour too!”
