Mark Travis is an award-winning entrepreneur, diversity consultant and acclaimed LGBTQ+ speaker whose work bridges the worlds of art, activism and business. As CEO and Founder of The Professional Storyteller, he champions the power of narrative to build more inclusive communities. A proud Puerto Rican queer man and one of the few artistic directors of colour in the US disability dance field, Mark uses his lived experience and professional expertise to inspire, educate and challenge audiences around the globe. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to equality, representation and the celebration of diverse voices.
Mark’s journey began with a deep love for dance, despite being born with cerebral palsy. Pursuing a BA in Women’s and Gender Studies with a minor in Public Relations from William Paterson University, Mark refused to let barriers define him. He founded Market Dance Project, becoming the youngest person in the US to lead an integrated dance company for disabled and non-disabled dancers. He was the first physically disabled Latinx choreographer selected for Ballet Hispanico’s Instituto Coreografico Programme. Mark’s influence extends beyond the arts into leadership roles with organisations such as AXIS Dance Company, Nika White Consulting and Hummingbird Humanity.
His creative path expanded into journalism, with bylines in outlets such as The Bergen Record, The Huffington Post and Fox News Latino. He has been a contributing author to notable works, including ‘Crisis and Care: Queer Activist Responses to a Global Pandemic’ and ‘Imagining: A Gibney Journal’. His debut collection, ‘Drafts: An Imperfect Collection for Writing’, was published in 2017. He has been recognised with honours, including the Campus Pride National Voice & Action Award for Social Justice and the Lavender Legacy Award, and is a member of WE CREATE SPACE, a global collective of LGBTQ leaders.
As a speaker, Mark has addressed audiences at Harvard, MIT, Rutgers, NYU and institutions worldwide, from the UK and Canada to Israel and India. His TEDx talk, ‘Embracing Yourself, Embracing Your Potential’, encapsulates his message of authenticity, resilience and empowerment. Drawing on his intersectional identity, professional expertise and global perspective, Mark engages audiences with warmth, clarity and courage. His storytelling transforms abstract ideas about diversity, equity and inclusion into relatable, actionable insights, making him a powerful voice for LGBTQ rights and an in-demand speaker for organisations committed to meaningful change.

“After four sessions with Mark Travis Rivera’s coaching program, I’m feeling grounded and centered. I’m rediscovering my core values, and I’m excited to dive into business development. Mark has an amazing way of connecting with me on many levels, pushing me to take action with purpose. He’s been a true inspiration while helping me gain clarity on my goals and providing the support I need to make them a reality. Mark has been where I want to go; he gives me feedback and helps me pivot. Seriously, Mark is the real deal.”
“Mark is much more than a treasured colleague and friend. He is an inspiration, a powerful and unique voice for so many communities that are often voiceless. His ability to communicate, tell his story, and inspire others is phenomenal. Whether one-on-one or speaking to a large group, Mark will move you, inspire you, and most of all make you think about things differently.”
“I am so grateful to have experienced Mark’s storytelling skills. Mark joined a group I facilitate every Sunday, of Queer Men of Color, where we come together to empower each other and heal. I asked Mark to come in and give a speech on validation and why it was important to love ourselves, and Mark OVERDELIVERED. In just 10 minutes, Mark inspired the whole group and left a lasting feeling that carried over into the rest of our session, and when it came to sharing our feelings, people were so much more open to share and express themselves after seeing themselves through Mark’s speech. Mark gave us bravery, courage, and reminded us that we are enough, and we were able to feel that even more through him. I highly recommend booking Mark to empower your groups, employees, and whoever else needs to understand who they are at the core through storytelling. Thank you, Mark!!!”
“There are so many positive things that I can say about Mark and the Living Purposely coaching program. I am a first-time business owner, and I went to Mark for coaching to get my business started and feel more confident while doing it. Mark has a holistic approach to coaching and focuses on the client as a person and not just a business. This allowed me to grow at my own pace and still make progress without fear of judgment or disappointment. The individual coaching sessions are a gem and allow you to have that one-on-one dedicated time with Mark and really hone in on what steps are best for what is going on presently. While there is still a lot of work for us to do, I am so happy with the growth I have been able to make and where I am headed with Mark’s guidance. Not only is he extremely talented at what he does, but he is also incredibly supportive, friendly, flexible, and honest, which was incredibly beneficial to my experience. It was an amazing experience, and I look forward to working with him more in the future. If you are looking for a speaking/engagement or business coach, look no further! I am forever appreciative to Mark for all that he has done for me and his contributions to a diverse and purposeful world.”
“AMDA College of the Performing Arts was incredibly lucky to have Mark do a series of faculty trainings on Inclusive Language and Movement Translation. His trainings were thorough and engaging, and he took the time to learn about AMDA before crafting the training tailored to our specific needs. His expertise and passion for improving inclusion for disabled dancers came across clearly, and I believe his trainings will have a lasting impact on AMDA’s commitment to disability justice.”
“Mark created a wonderful piece entitled ‘The Unmasking’ on my dancers. It was absolutely stunning and very well received by the entire audience at our performance!”
